Inhibitory effect of heavy metals on nitrogen production by anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria
نویسندگان
چکیده
Heavy metals (HMs) are common components of landfill leachates and piggery wastewater, which correspond with possible applications of the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). For this reason, the study of the fate and effect of HMs on the anammox process is of utmost importance. In this work, the effect of several HMs on the specific anammox activity (SAA) was studied. For this purpose, the normalized SAA was compared with soluble concentrations of several HMs, and the following inhibition constants (Ki) were calculated (μg L -1 ): 6,400 (Zn 2+ ), 4,070 (Cu 2+ ), 9,760 (Cd 2+ ), 37,210 (Ni 2+ ) and 6,510 (Pb 2+ ).

Response of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria to hydroxylamine.
Anaerobic ammonium oxidation is a recent addition to the microbial nitrogen cycle, and its metabolic pathway, including the production and conversion of its intermediate hydrazine, is not well understood. Therefore, the effect of hydroxylamine addition on the hydrazine metabolism of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria was studied both experimentally and by mathematical modeling. It ...
متن کاملAnaerobic Ammonium Oxidation in Waste Water - An Isotope Hydrological Perspective
Excess nitrogen components must be removed from wastewater to protect the quality of the water bodies that it will be eventually discharged to. A conventional wastewater treatment system for nitrogen removal is often involved with two processes, nitrification and denitrification. Nitrification is mostly achieved by complete oxidation of ammonium (NH4+) to nitrite (NO2-) by the appropriate aerob...

A bench-scale up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was applied to start-up the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process from conventional return activated sludge. The reactor was operated for approximately 170 days and was fed synthetic wastewater containing mainly nitrite ) (NO2 − and ammonium ) (NH 4 + as main substrates. After 106 days of operation, the first evidence of Ana...
